Q&A on ‘Spam information regarding Traveling Abroad through UNHCR’

- I recently received information that UNHCR Turkey is helping Syrians to travel abroad and I saw a letter with the UN logo confirming this. Is it true?
- No. If the flyer you saw is like the photo below then it is not true and must be considered fake. This information is not coming from UNHCR or from any other UN agency in Lebanon or Turkey.
Do not trust anyone who tells you this flyer is valid.
UNHCR procedures for travelling abroad (for Resettlement or Humanitarian Admission through UNHCR) are similar in all countries in the Middle Eastern region and therefore UNHCR does not encourage refugees to travel to other countries in the region with an aim to travel abroad, as it will not increase such opportunities.
Information on travelling abroad will only be communicated to you by UNHCR staff over the phone and you will be requested to approach a UNHCR office for an appointment.
Do not trust any information regarding travelling abroad (for Resettlement or Humanitarian Admission through UNHCR) from any source outside UNHCR. When unsure, please approach UNHCR to enquire.
The letter says:
United Nations Foundation / UN Center for refugees.
Important: The UN Center for Syrian refugees announces the opening of the opportunity of immigration to western countries, including USA, Canada, Australia and European countries starting on Monday, 9 February 2015.
Necessary documents: Syrian ID, passport, and preferably the Turkish refugee identity card.
Address/phone: Istanbul, Turkey
